  2. India Travel Tour Information

    May 1, 2010 by admin

India is a country that rejects rules and has an aversion to change; which has made it a land of great liberties. A European equivalent would be Italy. Laws may exist on the statue book but people only heed the ones that suit them or which they cannot get away with. Lax policing and a live and let live attitude keeps the whole system running. For example, drivers can and do pull out into the road, even major highways, without a signal or even bothering to look in their mirror (if they have one). There is an expectation that the traffic in the road will make way for them even if it risks an accident, and I’ve seen lots of close calls. Usually the only admonishment from the other drivers who have to swerve or brake will be a blast on the horn, because they know that the next time they also want to pull out, they will do exactly the same thing, and so life goes on - in a semi chaotic way.

When journalists write about the new India they are usually referring to the shiny new offices and businesses parks on the outskirts of the cities. These look like they have been dropped from somewhere in Europe and are full of earnest young people for whom the good times really are rolling. The middle classes have forsaken the trains and now get around country on the start up airlines that are competing hard for their business. Some of them (I particularly recommend Kingfisher Airlines) are really excellent. Another showcase of the New India is the Delhi Metro. This is work in progress with several lines being built that will by 2012 cover the whole city even reaching the international airport, (which technically is in another state), with most of the lines being built on cheaper elevated track. Most of this is being paid for by Japanese money, and unusually most of the equipment is imported rather than made in India. And it is impressive, unlike everywhere else in Delhi, it shines, you could eat your dinner off the floor in the stations and potted plants line the sides of the walls. Constant announcements tell people not to walk across the tracks(!), spit or throw rubbish and unusually for India, people heed them. One of reasons may be because security is so tight, with police with sub machine guns patrolling the trains and metal detector and bag searches just to get onto the platforms.
Outside these showcases life in India goes on much as it did when I first came here in 1989; this is particularly so in the countryside where most Indians still live. At dawn, people still walk out into the fields to do their ablutions; water comes from wells and bullock pull huge carts filled with straw. Cooking is done on Indian fuel cells which are made of cow dung mixed with straw and which are heaped in piles and sold on the side of the road. Also on the roadsides are brickworks where the bricks are still made by hand and fired in primitive kilns. The families who do this work live in the most desperate poverty, their ‘houses’ are little more than primitive tents made from rags and rubbish in the corner of the brickyard. One of the reasons these people live on the job, is because they cannot leave, they are indentured workers who work to pay off a past debt, sometimes from a previous generation, in conditions of virtual slavery. In one region I saw another agricultural/industrial process, the rendering down of sugar from sugar cane. These primitive factories on the roadsides crush the cane bought in from the surrounding fields with the ‘juice’ then boiled up in huge pans. Lines of these factories belching black smoke, with workers ladling the hot sugar out of the vats gives the impression of an early industrial scene, rather like the first days of Coalbrookdale. Yet this is modern India.
Where India is particularly unchanging is in anything in which the state is has any involvement, and as a hangover from the socialist planning era, it’s involved in a great deal. Its interests range from banks and insurance to (on a state level) running juice stands but by far its biggest interest is running the railways. Apart from there no longer being any steam engines around the railway system doesn’t seem to have changed at all over the last eighteen years. The train carriages have a chunky, metal, built to last feel to them, which is just as well as there doesn’t seem to been a penny of new investment for decades. Booking a berth involves filling in a cheap paper form then joining the queuing hoards so that someone can input your details into a seventies era computer system. Indian railways are the largest employer in the world with 1.6 million on the staff, and it looks just like a giant job creation scheme. As elsewhere in government run India, there are lots of ‘supervisors’ sitting around reading the paper and everyone knocks off for lunch. Surprisingly, the whole system does work very well, even if everything (even the journeys) usually happens very slowly.

In Delhi, Ambassador cars still line up outside the Lutyens Government buildings. These cars are based on the 1948 Morris Oxford design and are still made in India today. Although the President now has a BMW, the lower ranks will be motoring around in their sixty year old cars for some time. One of reasons Ambassador have kept on going is because they are strong enough to cope with India’s roads. Road widening is now commonly seen as the poor roads are seen as a brake on economic growth. Much of the digging work is done by (locally made) JCB’s, but a lot is still done by labourers, usually women who excavate earth in baskets and carry it away on their heads. What would these people do if they were all replaced by machines? In many ways everyone has a vested interest in resisting change, as doing these people out of their jobs who just mean more beggars living on the streets of the cities.

For the tourist India can be overwhelming, and it has certainly become a more stressful place to visit. Touts seem to be almost everywhere and the traveler is bombarded by questions all the time. ’Do you want a rickshaw?’ ‘Look in my shop?’ ‘What country?’ or simply ‘What do you want?’ Even more irritating are the people who seem to think they know want you want, so they give you orders like, ‘You need to go over there now’ or having supposedly read your mind, tell you where the ticket office is, even as you walk down the street minding your own business. Normally there is an ulterior motive for all this free advice, usually a postcard or rickshaw sales pitch. Add to all this, the children following you down the street shouting ‘Hello, Hello’ and tourists often feel they are under siege.

Also the Indian tourist industry hasn’t worked out what foreign tourists really want. So in a country awash with cheap labour, hotel walls are grubby, and things often look like they haven’t had a good clean for years. Of course if you pay out real money you can expect the best but for most Indians in the tourist trade, if they think they can offer it to you cheaply, then everything will be all right, no matter if every corner is cut. After all, it wouldn’t do to interfere with all that newspaper reading time. In Nepal, they’ve worked out the standards that tourists expect and consequently, overall, it offers a much better travel experience. Not surprisingly, it’s a country that allows foreigners to own a business, which pulls the standards up; in India this is almost impossible.

So what’s the future for India? The economy is supposed to be overheating and a downturn is expected. Inflation is on the increase and the Congress party recently got hammered in state polls because of the price of onions, which shows what really matters for most Indians. I think though, due to strength of numbers alone the economy will continue to grow and people will get richer in relative terms. I can’t imagine large parts of the country will be like the Delhi metro anytime soon; there are too many vested interests in keeping things the same. But the cities will become even more frantic, with more traffic and gridlock and the blare of the horns being heard on the other side of the world.

  3. The Tour Championship

    May 1, 2010 by admin

    Vijay Singh +500

    Sergio Garcia +800

    Phil Mickelson +1000

OK, the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs were a dud again this year.

That makes 0-for-2 in the drama department for the Tour’s postseason system that debuted in 2007. Last year, Tiger Woods had the FedEx Cup’s $10 million prize basically wrapped up by the time the Tour Championship rolled around. Most people expected a wide-open race in 2008 with Tiger sidelined by injury, but Vijay Singh put on a Tiger-esque performance by winning the first two playoff tournaments and only needs to not get disqualified this week to win the FedEx Cup.

So even though Singh technically has nothing to play for this week, you still have to count the hard-working Fijian as the favorite this week. He never takes a tournament off or for granted. No wonder Singh is the +450 WagerWeb.com favorite this week at East Lake in the smallest field (30 players) on Tour. He also has the advantage of being rested – Singh didn’t compete in last week’s draining Ryder Cup.

Singh credits his confidence with the putter for his recent surge this year.

"Just believing that stroking a putt is simpler than what I made it out to be," he said. "I mean, for years and years I've been a very decent putter, a good putter for that matter. But I never really used that to my advantage. I just kind of took it for granted and when things started going bad, the negatives were very strong, a very strong thing."

Singh leads the field in Tour Championship experience, playing in his 15th Tour Championship. He has finished no worse than fourth since the tournament moved permanently to the East Lake Golf Club in 2004. Ernie Els is next in experience, playing in his 13th tournament, with Phil Mickelson in the field for the 12th time in his career.

Of the 30 players in the field, 10 were members of the winning U.S. squad at last week's Ryder Cup. They are Chad Campbell, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Mickelson, Ben Curtis, Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Stewart Cink and Hunter Mahan. Furyk is the top favorite among the Americans at +750, while Kim was spectacular at the Ryder Cup and is +900 this week on WagerWeb.com.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia (+800 on WagerWeb.com) is the only member of the European Ryder Cup team to play in the Tour Championship, and he is the best of the returning players having finished fourth at East Lake last year.

Can Camilo Villegas give the FedEx Cup its second straight two-tournament victor? Villegas stopped Singh’s streak at the BMW Championship and is +1100 on WagerWeb.com

There are five past champions of the Tour Championship in the field. They are Billy Mayfair (1995), Mickelson (2000), Mike Weir (2001), Singh (2002) and Campbell (2003).

Interestingly enough, East Lake Country Club was rated the seventh-easiest course on the circuit last year with the 15th hole rated as the easiest of the PGA Tour's 55 courses.

With its huge body and manly contours, it is pretty hard to resist the 300C Touring. Even though the 300C Touring has a luxury car price tag, it is really more affordable—compared to Mercedes and BMW models—with ten times the wow factor that you will surely get for your money.

  5. Bmw Model F800st

    April 30, 2010 by admin

BMW has a loyal fan base which has helped it lead the market among European motorcycle manufacturers. But challengers to the throne like KTM are aggressively seeking to gain some of that market share. In the world of sports they say that competition brings out the best (and worst) in people, and that’s the same spirit that the boys in Bavaria have used to bring some of that market back home. Looking at its current lineup, BMW brass realized that among its 650cc singles, 1,200cc boxer twins and in-line fours it had, well, nothing in between. It needed a bike to fill that gap and attract more first-time buyers to the BMW experience. The new F800ST (and its sportier brother, the F800S) is the answer. Call them the affordable Beemers.

The F800ST being a BMW a range of options is available, including ABS brakes and matching saddlebags. There's a clever ratchet system to adjust their size and they're practical enough, if not the capacious carriers of the older machines.

Two key ingredients for successful sport touring are fuel economy and the functionality of the saddlebags. Despite its 800cc, the Beemer is surprisingly efficient with fuel. We averaged just a tick above 46 mpg in a variety of riding conditions, ranging from the quick canyon blast to the weekend getaway. That efficiency could come in handy, too, as the tank only holds 4.1 gallons. Something we noticed was that our ST’s fuel gauge would always show a full tank, even after traveling more than 100 miles, which should put the bike at about half a tank. It wasn’t until the 150-mile mark or so that the gauge would suddenly drop and show a quarter of a tank remaining. Weird.

What really sets this bike apart however is in the turns. Although I was by no means dragging knees on the demo, I have NEVER RIDDEN A BIKE THAT WAS AS RESPONSIVE AND EASY TO TURN. Pressure on the bars send this bike side to side VERY quickly and it tracks very well once put there. The suspension soaks up midcorner bumps with ease, and exhibits no problems on the brakes. (Dive etc...) It is much more well sorted than other BMW suspensions I have ridden (telelever). Brakes are not sportbike powerful but are more than sufficient and give excellent feedback. ABS....works....and is odd on a motorcycle. You choose whether you need/want it.

Although I didn't ride with a pax, my wife came and sat on it and said that the comfort was similar to the Sprint ST and substantially better than the SV.

    From the Saddle

BMWs get better the harder and longer you ride them, and the F800ST was no exception. A pleasure cruise through the country may be pleasant on just about any motorcycle, but when I rode the F800 between Montreal and Toronto it was a long, hard and fast day.

Characteristic Bimmer quirks are absent, like the sideways twitch when blipping the throttle and scuffed cylinder heads from aggressive cornering. And who can’t appreciate a gearbox that doesn’t clunk when cogs engage.

  7. Bmw – Superior German Quality

    April 29, 2010 by admin

BMW stands for "Bayerische Motoren Werke", this is an independent German company founded in 1922 but it is said that its origins go way back to 1913 or around the years of pioneering German aviation. BMW not only produces vehicles but it also manufactures and distributes high quality motorcycles.

BMW is also the parent company of brands such as MINI and highly prestigious Rolls-Royce. MINI is actually the name of a Cowley, England based subsidiary as well as that of a car produced by it. This type of car is said to be marketed as a retro design of the original Mini which was a small car produced around 1959. The most recent popular class is the Mini Cooper.

Rolls-Royce on the other hand, is the manufacturer of the high performance luxury car recognized world wide. This is also a subsidiary of BMW which is responsible of the Rolls-Royce Phantom production and development. Rolls-Royce Plc. the British aircraft engine manufacturer was privatized in 1987 and is considered the second largest in the world after General Electric Aviation, so this particular name brand goes a long way.

The most prominent and recent models this subsidiary has produced are: the "Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe" and the "EX-10".

BMW vehicles are classified according to "series", some of them are:

    * 1 Series: The 1 series is an entry-level vehicle introduced to the market in 2004. This series is expected to be launched in the US in 2008 in the 128i and 135i.

    * 3 Series: This series is also known as the compact executive type of car. The most recent models are the sport coupe (E92) and the sports coupe convertible (E93).

    * 5 Series: This is also known as a mid-size luxury/executive car and it is this particular series the one used to run tests and experiment new things. Recent models are: the E60 and the M5.

    * 6 Series: This series is known as the grand touring luxury sport coupe. Popular versions are the 645i (convertible), 650i (coupe) and the M6 which is a high performance vehicle within the 6 series.

    * 7 Series: Due to its design it is referred to as the full-size flagship executive sedan. This particular series features several groundbreaking characteristics such as the iDrive and also the first Hydrogen-powered luxury performance sedan. A prominent example within this series is the 760Li.

    * X3 and X5 Series: These are SUV type of vehicles, the X5 is referred to as a mid-size luxury SUV which has been in the market since 2000. Some examples are: the BMW X3 and the E70 BMW X5.

    * Z4: This is the 2 seater roadster and coupe which succeeded the Z3, a good example is the Z4 M.

There are many more categories within the BMW production line and since its vehicles are among the best in the world, this company has and will compete against other prestigious companies such as Ferrari and Benz.

  8. Bmw E30 M3

    April 28, 2010 by admin

The BMW M3 was a well thought out car, as development of the car begun as far back as 1981, and continued for almost six years prior to its total production in 1986. The original concept of the BMW M3 was grounded in foundations from the E30 3Series car, a famous performance car with rich background. The E30 M3 later would spawn and encourage numerous other models within the 3 Series. BMW Motorsport, previously produced the E12 M535i Saloons, M635Csi, and the M1 supercar, and those cars were designed for superior racing performance, but those cars could only garner limited appeal. The main idea about the E30 M3 was to snag a wider audience both on and off the racetrack. When the decision was made by "FISA's Group A" confirmed homologation, which stated that "5000 road cars should be produced within 12 months, with minimal changes but allowed changes to be made to the engine, drive train, and body". The actual production of the M3 took place at BMW, Munich, and BMW easily marketed and sold their 5000 M3's in order to enter "Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft"(DTM).

BMW created many different versions of the M3 in order to keep the car absolutely competitive under the stated rules, resulting in quite a number of enhanced models being delivered to the general public over a timeframe. The E30 M3 was very different from the remainder of the E30 family all round, especially regarding to appearance and performance. The E30 M3 was equipped with an altered, solid, increased aerodynamics precisely on body with "box flared" fenders so it can hold a broader track with broader, taller wheels and tires. The cabin silhouette was modified with a bigger and a sheerer raked back screen in order to refine high-speed airflow. The features that were unique to the M3 were a prominent wing and an elevated back deck. The M3 and the original E30 models shared only the hood and the roof, plus it also contained 3 times the "caster angle" than any other model. The M3 also shared its single piston calipers, larger wheel bearings, stub axles with the "E28 5 Series" model, and the car was only constructed as a left-hand drive car. The one factor that gave the M3 its true genius was its faultless balance, outstanding handling and a pure realistic driving experience that none could match.

The basis of the E30 M3's engine was evolved from the "BMW M88 inline, 6 block", the fundamental architecture and the valve train from "BMW's M1", and the later science from the "M6 inline, 6 cylinder". The E30 M3 was first introduced with a "2.3 litre 16 valve, 4 cylinder" engine, with a max power of 192bhp (143kW) and immediate acceleration from 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds, along with a top speed of 143 mph (230km/h). The M3's suspension was the essential design concept of the traditional E30 along with "gas pressurized dual Boge dampers", improved springs, along with powerful anti-roll bars positioned at the front and the back. The braking system embodied "Bosch ABS system" working simultaneously with 280mm ventilated discs at the front, and 282mm solid discs at the rear. The E30 M3 had a couple fascinating attributes, which included "Siamese-like pistons", an additional oil cooler positioned behind the spoiler, "a cast alloy sump", a unusually long "stroke camshaft" with the stroke (84mm) and the bore (93.4mm), resulting in 2302cc, and unique steering help with "quick ratio steering rack".

The E30 M3 unfolded as and rebuttal to the "1983 2.3 litres, 16 valve Mercedes Benz W201", out of which the M3 was more successful despite its big price tag. The M3 kept its heritage on the track radically triumphant as it obtained 12 various touring car championships titles between 1986-1991, and 13 various racing titles between 1987-1993. Over 18,000 various M3s were produced up until when the last cabriolet was turned out in 1991. BMW has no other car within their roster that has ever achieved and done so much for their namesake, as the M3 is still regarded as the number one racetrack performance car of all time.

  9. Are You Confused over Which BMW Car to Purchase?

    April 28, 2010 by admin

If you have been considering a luxury vehicle that understands your needs, and at the same time suits your tastes; then take a BMW car is a make that deserves serious consideration. Having been in the automobile market for nearly 90 years now, BMW is one of the most respected names in the automobile industry when it comes to luxury car brands, competing with other European cars such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Jaguar and Audi.

One of the most important things to note is that they do not cater exclusively to the super-rich, but to numerous people in the luxury car market. What this means is even if you do not have an exceedingly high budget, you can still purchase a BMW car, for most that would be at least in the 3 series.

    The Past

BMW actually stands for an acronym for Bavarian Motor Works, or technically Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. This company was founded in the year 1913 by Karl Friedrich Rapp in Munich, Germany. Their slogan is The Ultimate Driving Machine, which also makes the suggestion why even the lowest-end BMW car is really a great automobile. The trademark of their cars lied in the kidney grills, which were first seen on the BMW 303 in the early 1930s. The design of the cars changed according to the eras to more contemporary designs.

    The Present

From the 2500 and 2800, now their cars range from the 1 series to the 6 series, the X series to the Z series, and not to mention; the M series!

If you have a tighter budget, but still want a BMW car, then you might want to go for the 1 series. A compact BMW car by nature, this sedan suits the needs of the majority of people as one of the most perfect urban cars. If you can, you might want to opt for the 3 series which people say is the most favorite and famous of them all. There are sedans, coupes and convertibles, each according to their own power train sub-series categorization.

Entering the upper echelons of the luxury line, we have the 5 series. The current 5 series is universally known as one of the fiercest looking cars, and this BMW car series comes in the forms of sedan and touring. Moving up further, we have the 6 series, which is very exclusive and rare. And then the 7 series tops the luxury line and is many individuals dream car across the globe.

With yet another category altogether, there are the SUVs, or the ex-series, or to be more exact would be the X5 and X3. Additionally there is the Z series, which includes the Z3, Z4, Z8, and soon to be released Z9. Then finally would be the muscle car division of the BMW car series. The M series, which at the moment is made up of the M3, M5, M6 and Z4M.

  10. Fresh Bmw 5 Series to Launch in 2010

    April 27, 2010 by admin

With an entirely new platform and striking new design in the exterior, the BMW 5 Series is set to be unleashed in 2010. Generally speaking the engineered designs is a huge departure from the present yet ever intriguing E60 5 Series. The “flame surfacing”, however, is remained as is. It is BMW’s design play of concave and convex shapes.

Some of the new BMW 5 Series’ design cues are adopted from the current 3-Series. Examples of these are the rear lamps and v-shaped hood lines that extend down into the front grille bumper fascia, and the coupe-like roof-line that expands down into the quarter panels and luggage lid. In effect, the abhorrent “bangle butt” is gone.

BMW indeed continues to offer its customers a more advanced technology built vehicles as it makes the new BMW 5 Series with more striking appeal to the public. A Flex-Ray high-speed vehicle network architecture (for more agility), new torque splitting all-wheel-drive (which also known as Dynamic Performance Control), refined I-Drive (for an additional driving aid), and a light-hybrid engine system are just few of the new high technology features that come along with this vehicle. As to the engine, the new M5 will retain its V10. It will, however, come with increased horsepower and an 8-speed dual-clutch gear box (i.e. DSG).

The Auto Motor Sports Sweden insider gave the scoop on this new BMW 5 Series and the scoops on the new features were visually presented through computer renderings created by Radovan Varicak, an AMS illustrator.

    About the BMW 5 Series

Manufactured by German auto maker BMW starting 1972, the BMW 5 Series is a mid-size luxury car and is also considered an executive car. Now on its fifth generation, the vehicle is currently sold under the body styles of sedan and touring.

The name “5 Series” was derived from its being the fifth of the "new series" cars after the fame of V-8 and Isetta. The "New Class", the "New Six" 2500/2800/Bavaria and the CS were the preceding models of the 5 Series. It was built with the aim of replacing the smaller New Class sedans and leaving the coupes as the company's low-end model.

The Series’ body was patterned on the Bertone 1970 BMW Garmisch 2002ti Geneva show car and was styled by Marcello Gandini. He also styled tow other cars tha thave similar designs: the Fiat 132 and the Alfa Romeo Alfetta.

Now there are already 5 generations of the 5 Series. Their identified chassis numbers (EXX) distinguishes them from one another.

The 5 Series was the one that initiated the German auto maker’s tradition of being named with a three-digit number. In the case of this vehicle, the first digit represents the model, and the following two digits are usually representing the size of the engine in deciliters. The main distinguishing characteristics are the last two digits. To define the fuel type used by the vehicle as to petrol or diesel, additional letters or words may be added to the end of the three-digit number. These added letters or words also identify engine or transmission details, and the body style.

With BMW New Class 1500-2000 as its predecessor, all 5 Series vehicles are available with quality assured BMW headlight. These vehicles are similar to Audi A6, Jaguar S-Type, Lexus GS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac STS and Volvo S80.
